This week we went to Coruche for a study visit to the river and an immersion in the local experience. It was an opportune moment to start the year by re-understanding our area of operation.
Our goal was to connect with more stakeholders and understand the river’s flow. To do this, we conducted a small exercise, placing biodegradable tracers at different points along the river to map its flow.
In addition, we visited a fish observation station developed by the Coruche Municipality with the intention of using this space for the Citizen Science project.
We also went to assess, during this period of winter rains, how the river transported plastic waste along its course. To do this, we spoke with Afonso, a local resident, activist, and entrepreneur of the River Route initiative who offers canoe trips down the river. Our exchange highlighted key locations where the river accumulates more or less waste after the rainy season, a first study on where our TRAP device could be installed.
