Kick Off Meeting TRAP

The launch meeting for the TRAP – Freeing Our Rivers from Plastics project spanned two days, starting in Lisbon at @tecnico_lisboa and continuing in Coruche, Portugal.

Last week, this European initiative kicked off in Lisbon and Coruche. TRAP brings together partners from Portugal, Spain, France, and Ireland to create innovative solutions for capturing plastics in rivers and estuaries—using digital tools, nature-based structures, and citizen participation.

Key Highlights of the Project:

  • Active Guardianship: Local communities will help design, test, and improve solutions, becoming active protectors of their rivers.

  • Pilot Project: A pilot will be conducted on the Sorraia River in Coruche (Portugal), with the support of @municipio_de_coruche.

  • The Symbol: TRAP chose the otter as its symbol and logo, as this species is found in all four project countries and depends on healthy waterways to survive.

  • Long-term Goal: By 2028, TRAP will deliver a practical toolkit to help authorities, NGOs, and companies combat plastic pollution in rivers across the Atlantic region.

We would like to thank all the participants of these two days of work and connection for their commitment, contributions, energy, and joy.
